Biography


Dr Hawrelak is a clinician (Western herbalist, naturopath and nutritionist) and experienced researcher, author and educator. His Honours and PhD degrees were in the area of gut dysbiosis, irritable bowel syndrome and the clinical applications of pre-and probiotics. Dr Hawrelak also runs a busy practice at Goulds Naturopathica, a 136-year-old natural medicine apothecary located in central Hobart. The main focus of Jason’s practice is in the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions, both acute and chronic - such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), dysbiosis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, coeliac disease, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, peptic ulcer disease, intestinal parasites and fructose intolerance.

He is currently the Senior Lecturer in Complementary and Alternative Medicines at the School of Medicine in the University of Tasmania where he coordinates the Evidence-Based Complementary Medicine programs. He is also the Natural Gastroenterology lecturer in the Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine program at the University of Western States (Portland, Oregon). He is the main researcher and developer of ProbioticAdvisor, providing independent, unbiased, evidence-based information on probiotics.
